Etara – Open-air Ethnographic Museum

The architectural and ethnographic complex “Etara” is a unique open-air museum. It is located in Gabrovo, in the southern part of the town, not far from the Sokol Monastery. The complex was established in 1964 in order to show what the craft town of Gabrovo looked like in the XVIII – XIX century.

The museum has a total of 50 sites – houses with craft workshops, water facilities and other buildings. Here is the only collection of technical equipment in Bulgaria, powered by water – mills, tepavitsa, grinders and more.

Etara is one of the most visited sights in Bulgaria. For Bulgarians the complex is extremely valuable with the traditions it preserves, and for foreign guests it is extremely interesting to get acquainted with the bits of Bulgarian life and culture. The biggest attraction for tourists is the craft bazaar (street) with numerous workshops.
