Euxinograd Residence

Residence “Evksinograd” is located 8 km north of Varna and is located on a 3-kilometer coastline near the resort “St. Constantine and Helena ”. The complex was the summer residence of the monarchs who ruled Bulgaria after the liberation from Ottoman rule (1878) – Alexander Battenberg, Ferdinand and Boris III.

Knyaz Battenberg visited Varna in 1880 and he was welcomed at the monastery “St. Dimitar”, which was situated at the same place, where now the residence stands. The monarch liked the local nature so much, that two years later the Varna municipality bestowed him the monastery and its adjoining lands.

KnyazFerdinand, himself very keen on botany and ornithology, paid special attention to the construction of the park and invited prominent French specialists. Here you can see a rare collection of trees, some of which are not found anywhere else on the Balkan Peninsula. The complex has a Greek and English garden, but the most attractive is the part of the park in front of the palace with a fountain and a beautiful bronze statue of Neptune, brought from France.

The whole “Euxinograd” spreads over nearly 900 acres of land owned by the Bulgarian state, and includes in addition to the main building of the palace, also greenhouses for rare plant species and fresh flowers, French garden and English park, wine cellar with newly planted vineyards, sports complex , several holiday villas, the former residence of the head of state, a hotel and administrative part with a restaurant, as well as several buildings where in the past the royal servants and the stable were housed.

Euxinograd wines are still famous today for their excellent quality. Grapes from the Chardonnay, Riesling, Traminer, Muscat Otonel and Vratsa Muscat varieties are used in the production of the winery. White wines are produced by classical and modern methods and stored in oak barrels. The winery is also proud of its good brandy and organizes tastings of its best products for its guests.

Another landmark in the area of the residence are the remains of the late antique fortress “Kastritsi” in the northeastern part of the park.

Euxinograd is open for tourists. The tourist route includes the historical core of the park with the greenhouses, the palace building, the sundial (a gift to King Ferdinand from Queen Victoria), the chapel of St. Dimitar ”and the cellar building.
