History of Plovdiv’s ancient theater
As one of the most important cities within the Roman Empire, Philippopolis had its own theater, which still shines in the heart of the Old Town as the only restored and functioning ancient theater in Bulgaria, and one of the best preserved in the world. It is located on the southern slope of the Three Hills, in the saddle between Jambaz Tepe and Taksim Tepe. Apart from theatrical performances, it was used for gladiatorial and hunting games. It was active until the 5th century and gathered about 6,000 spectators. In 1981 it was partially restored. Now this site is fully adapted to the modern cultural life of Plovdiv and it hosts various performances for about 3,500 spectators.
The stylistic features of Hellenistic and Roman theater intertwine in the theater. It was mainly intended for theatrical performances, but numerous administrative inscriptions prove that the building was also used as the seat of the General Assembly of the Roman province of Thrace (traconcoinone). Competitions for poets, musicians, singers and heralds were held here, as well as animal fights and gladiatorial battles, as evidenced by the specific features of the structure itself.
The main parts of the Ancient Theater in Plovdiv are the stage, the orchestra and the theater. The great economic and political importance of Philippopolis during the Hellenistic era led to the need for such a theater. Apart from the rich architecture, its location was also important. Thus was built one of the most successful theaters in the province of Thrace.
Philippopolis has been repeatedly subjected to devastation and natural disasters, and the Ancient Theater has been hidden underground for centuries. Its discovery lasted ten years.
The theater has a typical scheme for that time. It is divided into two parts. The seats up to the fourteenth row are marble without backrests. The theater is divided into sectors by stairways. The lower part is divided into six and the upper part into twelve sectors. The marble decoration is of two types of marble – entablature and local marble, from which the seat rows are made.
Nowadays, the Ancient Theater is one of the emblems of Plovdiv. Its restoration is recognized as one of the best achievements of the Bulgarian conservation school. It has undergone thorough research in order to avoid any mistakes that could harm the site in the future, and the use of new materials is clearly noted. Apart from being a tourist attraction, today the amphitheater hosts many cultural events and its capacity reaches 3,000 people.
