Panagyurishte – The treasury of Bulgaria!
The town of Panagyurishte is located in a picturesque valley of Sashtinska Sredna Gora, at 540 m above sea level. The population of the city is about 21,000 people.
The area of the city has been inhabited since ancient times, as evidenced by the discovery of more than 300 monuments – necropolises, settlements, fortresses, military camps and road facilities.
An obligatory stop for learning about the history of Panagyurishte is the History Museum. The central building of the museum includes an archeological hall, which exhibits original finds discovered during excavations in the area of the city. The central exposition of the museum is dedicated to the participation of Panagyurishte in the April Uprising. Another exhibition is dedicated to the liberation of Panagyurishte from Ottoman rule and the participation of Panagyurishte in the Union of the Principality of Bulgaria with Eastern Rumelia in 1885.
A special hall is dedicated to the Panagyurishte Golden Treasure. Here you can see a copy of the gold set, and the original is kept in the National History Museum in Sofia.
Another important place that should not be missed is the “Djunova House”. It traces the emergence and development of the Revival Panagyurishte goldsmith school and the techniques used. In the beautiful blue Hadjidimitrova house was shown a collection of works of art, wood carvings, copper work, ceramics and jewelry. The Tuteva, Lekova and Drinova houses are also interesting for the tourists.
The Panagyurishte region is also famous for its hunting tourism. Many hunting enthusiasts prefer this place because the territory of the hunting farm is very large.
We recommend you to taste in the area:
✓ Cheese, yellow cheese and milk – from local farms in the Balkans;
✓ Katak (ishmer) – prepared fresh (goat, sheep, cow)
✓ Bulgarian Kurban
✓ Balkan trout
✓ Eggs in Panagyurishte style – Eggs are “veiled” – in boiling water, with vinegar and constant stirring, the eggs are crushed to boil. They are served with yoghurt containing crushed garlic, fat is added and red pepper and finely chopped fresh dill are sprinkled.
✓ Rose jam – prepared from the leaves of the oil-bearing rose. Rose jam, besides being very tasty, is also very useful. It has laxative, antispasmodic, anti-inflammatory, choleretic and antimicrobial action.
Panagyurishte offers a variety of opportunities for rural, eco, cultural, historical, balneal and hunting tourism in nature, which in combination with fresh air and beautiful architecture, make this place the most desirable tourist destination in Srednogorie area.
