Varna – Varna Winery – Salla Estate Winery
The city of Varna is situated in the North-Eastern part of Bulgaria, on the Black Sea shore. Varna is the third largest city in Bulgaria and the largest one on the Black Sea shore.Because of its history and its economical and cultural significance, it is often called the Sea Capital of Bulgaria.
The town was established in the 6th century BC under the name of Odessos by emigrants from the town of Milet in Asia Minor. For a short time it turned into a polis and one of the most important ports and commercial centers on the Black Sea.
Our first winery will be the Varna Winery. Located close to the coast on a stretch between Albena and Golden Sands, this winery is very convenient if staying somewhere along the coast. This modern winery is quite developed for wine tourism and features a winetasting room, a restaurant and a shop. The winery owns 50 ha. of vineyards and actually grows more grapes than it has the capacity for. Once again white wines are the main focus at this winery but interestingly they also grow the Italian Sangiovese. The Sangiovese is mainly used in their interesting blend named SMS due to the three varieties used: Syrah, Merlot or Sangiovese. A busy winery during tourist season but definitely a place to “drop-by” in the region.
From there continue to Salla Estate Winery. Located in the small village of Blaskovo, this place is a gem. At first, you wonder if you’re in the right place driving into the property. The owners also own an extensive agricultural business and the first sights upon driving through the main gate are agricultural equipment and warehouses. Through another more picturesque gate you find a spacious parking lot with pretty mural paintings and antique horse carriages that supposedly still work. This small winery is very charming and welcoming. Apart from the wine production area adjunct to the cellar, wine tasting area and wine shop, there is a beautiful guesthouse on the grounds and a very special horseriding centre. What makes the riding centre so special? This particular riding centre is the only one in Bulgaria featuring world-famous Lipizzaner horses that were first bred in the Austrian Empire. When it comes to wine, the grapes are grown on roughly 30 ha. White varieties dominate due to the terroir conditions but quite a few red wines are in their portfolio including excellent Cabernet Franc and Pinot Noir. The local Varnenski Misket is also produced here. Wine tastings are especially delicious here as the owner also produces typical Bulgarian cheeses (yellow and white cheese) that are served during wine tastings. Great place to spend the night. Here you can enjoy some wine and good food, go for a walk in the countryside, ride a Lipizzaner horse and relax before continuing your travels in Bulgaria. Overnight at your hotel.
Day 6 – Аladzha monastery – Evxinograd Palace – Estuary of Veleka river
Our first stop will be in Aladzha monastery. He is the most famous medieval cave monastery on the Bulgarian Black Sea coast. It was inhabited by hermit monks during the XIII- XIV centuries.
It was in the end of XIX century when the founders of the Bulgarian archaeology- Shkorpil brothers, Karel and Hermin, began to systematically study this Christian monument.
In 1927, Aladzha Monastery was declared a public historical monument and in 1968 it was declared an architectural cultural monument of national significance.
The monastery caves are hewn on two levels into an almost 40m high limestone rock. The first level consists of a monastery church, monastic cells, a dining premise and a kitchen, a small cemetery church, a crypt (bone-vault) and farm premises. The second level is a natural cave recess in the eastern end of which there is a monastery chapel.
Then we continue our trip to Evxinograd Palace. The Evksinograd Residence is located at a distance of 8 kilometers north of Varna and lies on a 3-kilometer coastline in close proximity to the resort of St. Constantine and Helena. The complex used to be a royal summer residence for the monarchs who ruled Bulgaria after the liberation of the country from the Ottoman Dominion (1878) – Alexander Battenberg, Ferdinand and Boris the 3rd.
Prince Battenberg visited Varna in 1880 and he was welcomed at the monastery “St. Dimitar”, which was situated at the same place, where now the residence stands. The monarch liked the local nature so much, that two years later the Varna municipality bestowed him the monastery and its adjoining lands.
Our last stop will estuary of river Veleka. The mouth of Veleka River is the most scenic spot on the Bulgarian Black Sea Coast. It preserves the valley of Veleka River, the spit (approximately 500 m long) and part of the Black Sea Coast. One can find rare and protected plants such as Otanthus maritimus, Stachys maritima, sea carrot, sea bindweed, etc. there. This is the only place in the Nature Park where the endangered yellow water-lily (Nuphar lutea) can be seen.
Early evening return to Varna/Balchik/Shkorpilovtsi.
